What Is Wildcard Characters In SQL?

  • The Wildcard are special characters in SQL represented by special symbols.
  • These special characters are used with any other string to produce meaningful search pattern.
  • SQL Wildcard characters are used with LIKE operator and search the data within a database table.

Syntax:

SELECT column_name(s)
FROM table_name
WHERE column_name LIKE search_pattern;

Following are SQL Wildcards:

Wildcard Description
% A substitute for zero or more characters
_ A substitute for a single character
[charlist] Sets and ranges of characters to match
[!charlist] Matches only a character NOT specified within the brackets

Example-1: Use of % wildcard

SELECT *
FROM products
WHERE p_name LIKE "l%";
