What is the “>” (greater-than sign) CSS selector mean?

  • > is the child combinator, also known as the direct descendant combinator.
  • According the following example the selector div > blockquote > p.some-css-class only selects paragraphs of .some-css-class that sits inside a <div> and <blockquote>, not paragraphs that are directly nested in <div>.

Example:

<style>
div > blockquote > p.some-css-class {
 color:red;
 font-weight:bold;
}
</style>
<div>
 <p class="some-css-class">
 This is text1. I have not selected by Css class.
 </p>

 <blockquote>
 <p class="some-css-class">
 This is text2. I have selected by Css class.
 </p>
 </blockquote>
</div>
