JQuery event.preventDefault() vs return false

Example-1 event.preventDefault():

$('someSelector').click(function (e) {
    // custom handling here
    e.preventDefault();
});

Example-2 return false:

$('someSelector').click(function () {
    // custom handling here
    return false;
});

  • In above examples return false works same as e.preventDefault and e.stopPropagation.
  • e.preventDefault() prevents the default event from occurring.
  • e.stopPropagation() prevents the event from bubbling up and return false will do both.
